A student team called NUST Ecomotive has made their mark at Shell Eco-marathon France 2017 and they are now gearing up for Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2018 which is to be held in Singapore.
Starting with nothing but pure ambition and the courage to attempt a feat no one else had attempted from their university, Team NUST Ecomotive took on the challenge that is Shell Eco-marathon. Along the way, they went through a lot of trials, errors, and readjustments in addition to the problems caused by limited resources; however, they believe it was a satisfying journey.
Shell Eco-marathon is a global competition where around 200 student teams compete with each other. It is conducted thrice yearly by Shell in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The objective of the competition is to design and build an energy efficient vehicle that contributes to the sustainable future. The teams must try to maximize the distance travelled by their vehicles on one liter of fuel.
A team of highly motivated and technically adept students from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SMME) and School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) at NUST H-12 formed to design and manufacture a vehicle for competing in Shell Eco-marathon France 2017. After months of demanding work on the project, with limited resources to work with, Team NUST Ecomotive proudly displayed their final product which they eventually took to France where their efforts were highly appreciated, which added to the glory of their institution and home.
Their vehicle was made with a steel chassis, and an ultra-light and robust carbon fiber body. The car also included a dead man’s switch, a collision avoidance system, and an Eco-assist system. Additionally, the team painted the car in a traditional Pakistani truck art fashion.
In the future, one may expect to see Team NUST Ecomotive compete at Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2018 in Singapore as the team is already dedicated to working on a brand new vehicle which will perform even better than the one they made previously.
